OUR EXPERIENCE WITH LAPAROSCOPIC INGUINAL HERNIOPLASTY

Milan Chobola, Tomáš Hroch, Petr Motyčka, Jiří Páral

VZL 2001, 70(5):177-181

The authors describe their experience with laparoscopic inguinal hemioplasty. From January 1996 to October 2000 they performed 159 laparoscopic repairs of the inguinal hernia. Twenty-six of these repairs were due to recurrences after previous open hernia surgery and one was due to recurrence after laparoscopic hernia surgery. During the postoperative follow-up period, which ranged from 2-60 months, 3 (1.9 %) recurrences were observed after TAPP (transabdominal preperitoneal approach). Most of the perioperative and postoperative complications were minor. Their experience and results demonstrate that laparoscopic inguinal hemioplasty is an effective...

VACCINATION AGAINST VIRAL HEPATIS B IN HEALTH SERVICE WORKERS IN THE ARMY

František Machula

VZL 2001, 70(5):182-184

The article presents a retrospective view of army health service worker vaccinations against viral hepatitis B and it shows the development of professional morbidity with viral hepatitis B over the last 25 years. The results presented show the significant decline in professional morbidity after the vaccination had been started. The study also informs us about new regulations for carrying out a special vaccination and for the prophylactic procedure after parenteral exposure to biological material.

THE ROLE OF ADHESION MOLECULES IN INFLAMMATORY POSTRADIATION CHANGE DEVELOPMENT MECHANISMS PART I — INTERCELLULAR ADHESION MOLECULE-1 (ICAM-L)

Jan Österreicher, Viktor Meineke, Aleš Macela, Dirk van Beuningen

VZL 2001, 70(5):188-191

This paper presents current knowledge about the general functions and interactions of intercellular adhesion molecule I (ICAM-I) as well as the influence of ionizing irradiation on its expression. The presence of ICAM-1 is essential for leucocyte cell penetration through the vascular wall in the interstitial tissues of  arious organs. The overexpression of ICAM-1 is potentiated by TNF-α and IL-1β, and by proinflammatory cytokines which mediate the general proinflammatory cytokine cascade responsible for inflammatory development of all etiologies, not only irradiation one.

THE INFLUENCE OF THE OXIME HI-6 DOSE ON ITS PROPHYLACTIC OR THERAPEUTIC EFFICACY IN SOMAN POISONING IN MICE

Jiří Kassa

VZL 2001, 70(5):192-196

The dose-dependent prophylactic and therapeutic efficacy of the acetylcholinesterase reactivator Hl-6 against soman-induced acute toxicity was investigated.A comparison of the LD50 values of soman in cases of acute poisoning treated with the oxime HI-6 in combination with atropine showed that the dose of the oxime HI-6 had a marked influence on its efficacy regardless of its prophylactic or therapeutic administration. The highest efficacy was achieved when the oxime HI-6 was administered at a maximum dose. A significant difference between prophylactic and therapeutic administration of HI-6 was only found in cases where there was a...

BOTULINUM TOXIN AND BIOLOGICAL WEAPONS CONVENTION

Vladimír Měrka

VZL 2001, 70(5):205-208

Botulinum toxin A (BTX) is the most toxic compound known to man. An overview of its proved, presumed or prepared deployment as a biowarfare agent is presented. In case of BTX it can be shown just how difficult it is to distinguish its research, production and storage for purely medical purposes from its abuse for waging biological warfare or for bioterrorism. An additional protocol to the Biological Weapons Convention of 1972 created during the long-term negotiations should make this possible.
