EDITORIAL 2018Announcement

Pavel Boštík

MMSL 2018, 87(4):146-147

Dear readers and friends of MMSL, a year has gone by since my last greeting to you was published in the MMSL. As I predicted there, the year has been full of visible and less visible changes in the journal. Those, who only read our articles, may have missed the implementation of a new editorial system tailored specifically to the needs of the journal. The system that shows its features mainly to the authors submitting their articles has brought major advances to the editorial process. It is now fully comparable to systems used by the majority of foreign scientific journals. The path of the individual manuscripts is now fully traceable and the review...

HIGHLY TOXIC RIBOSOME-INACTIVATING PROTEINS AS CHEMICAL WARFARE OR TERRORIST AGENTSReview article

Jiří Patočka

MMSL 2018, 87(4):158-168 | DOI: 10.31482/mmsl.2018.027

Biological weapons include infectious agents and toxins. Toxins are poisons produced by living organisms. An important group of toxins are ribosome inactivating proteins (RIPs) of plant or microbial origin that inhibit protein synthesis by inactivating ribosomes. RIPs have been of great scientific interest due to their importance in human health, as both pathogenic agents and therapeutics, but also due to their potential use in biological warfare and bioterrorism. RIPs relevant to bioterrorism include mainly ricin and abrin. Ricin is protein produced in the seeds of the castor oil plant (Ricinus communis). Abrin is protein that has been isolated...

IS GLYPHOSATE REALLY HAZARDOUS FOR HUMAN HEALTH?Review article

Jiri Patocka

MMSL 2018, 87(4):169-183 | DOI: 10.31482/mmsl.2018.030

Glyphosate [N-(phosphonomethyl) glycine] is one the world's most widely used agricultural herbicide. It allows farmers to spray a planted field, generally before the crops have sprouted, killing weeds but not the crops that will grow there. GMO critics claim glyphosate is linked to autism, cancer, gluten allergies, ‘leaky gut’ syndrome and other disorders. Concerns about glyphosate’s possible health impacts increased in 2015 after the International Agency for Research on Cancer, a research arm of the World Health Organization, classified glyphosate as “probably carcinogenic”. The ecological risk assessment indicates that...
