Dear readers,you have been reading the last issue of this year of the scientific journal Military Medical Science Letters -MMSL, which represents the scientific publishing platform of the Faculty of Military Health Sciences. Our journal is unique not only due to its specialization on the biomedical research primarily pertaining to the military area, but also due to its uninterrupted history since 1925. History this long is unusual for a scientific journal even within the European or worldwide comparison.

In this year, we faced several fundamental changes in the Military Medical Science Letters. Firstly, after several years being solely focused on accepting articles in English we also started publishing articles in Czech. Secondly, our website (mmsl.cz) is out-of-date and we expect running a new website soon...

Hepatitis E virus is responsible for epidemics and also endemics of this kind of diseases in humans, through waterborne, foodborne and zoonotic transmissions. A lot of aspects of VHE pathogenesis, replication, and immunological responses remain unknown up to this time. The virus is an extremly understudied but on other hand important human pathogen.

The circumstances of the WW II, paradoxically, contributed to the development of modern surgery of the hand, when General Norman T. Kirk, the US Army Surgeon General at that time, initiated establishment of centers for treatment of war hand injuries. Concurrently, he asked Sterling Bunnell, the author of the book Surgery of the hand, to train specialists in order to diminish number of disabled persons due to hand injuries. In 1946, nine leaders of those centers were among others who established the American Society of Hand Surgery, while Sterling Bunnell became its first President. Together with the protection of the sick and wounded in armed conflicts, rules of international humanitarian law (IHL) provide protection to medical facilities and personnel. Despite universal acknowledgement of these rules, their violations occur regularly. Causes of these violations are numerous and complex, however, in order to be respected, IHL rules need to be in the first place implemented within domestic legislations of individual states. Altogether 32 doctoral degree students presented their work at the 11th faculty conference this year. The lectures were divided into four thematic sections. In the first section of epidemiology and medical microbiology, five students presented. In the second section of infectious biology and military radiobiology, 13 students attended. In the section of preventive medicine, military surgery and military internal medicine, we the audience was presented with six contributions.
