The article summarizes the results of conscript vaccination with meningococcal polysacharide vaccine A+C in the Czech Army. From 1995 to 2002 (April) more than 221 000 persons were vaccinated and a vaccination status of more than 99% _ was reached. The frequency of post-vaccination reactions, which were not serious in most cases, was very low (0.35%). During the seven years of vaccination there was a failure of vaccination in two cases and an invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) caused by Neisseria meningitidis group C developed. The authors inform us about the aetiological agent of mass toxic damage to the Skin of 28 Czech Army soldiers. The reader is provided with an overview of natural furocumarines which are the aetiological agents of skin infection and are produced by some well-known plants and also with clinical symptoms of health damage. History proves that human beings have known about plants producing phototoxic compounds as their natural way of defence since time immemorial and have used them for therapeutic purposes up to now. At the end of the article the authors disscuss simple preventive measures during contact with parsnip and other similar plants.
