ANTI-INFLAMMATORY ACTIVITY OF PLATELET-RICH PLASMA TREATMENT IN THE INFLAMMATION MANAGEMENT OF KNEE OSTEOARTHRITIS: EXPERIMENTAL STUDYOriginal articleHaider A. Yousif, Ajil A. Alzamily, Ihsan A. AlsalmanMMSL 2023, 92(4):356-366 | DOI: 10.31482/mmsl.2022.055 Background: The level of pro-inflammatory Cluster of Differentiation 68 (CD 68) could be beneficial for examination as a biomarker for identifying cartilage or knee tissue degradation in joint problems. Because Cluster of Differentiation 68 appears to be linked to cell damage in the injury area, its measurement may be an effective and sensitive tool for detecting the early development of knee osteoarthritis (KOA) in people at risk for knee osteoarthritis.Aim of the study: The study aimed to evaluate which type of PRP (Pure-PRP and leukocyte-PRP) are suitable for patients with KOA via assessing the levels of serum CD 68 concentration.Materials and Methods: Serum Cluster of Differentiation 68 level was computed using ELISA kits. The experimental study comprises 21 pure-platelet-rich plasma (P-PRP) injections,11 leukocytes platelet-rich plasma (L-PRP) injections, and 16 control groups. Ranged from 35- 75 years old. All patients with diabetes mellitus, autoimmune disease, and severe knee osteoarthritis were excluded from this study. The period of the study was between November 2021 to June 2022. This study assessed other factors such as age, sex, family inheritance, and body mass index (BMI). The level of CD 68 was measured in the serum before and after the injection for six weeks. Results: The level of the study showed CD 68 elevated before injection in patients with knee osteoarthritis. A significant decrease of CD 68 (P< 0.01-P<0.001) in the serum concentration after injection as compared to before injection. However, the concentration was significantly higher than the control. Conclusions: In conclusion, both P-PRP and L-PRP demonstrated anti-inflammatory properties. Patients in both groups experienced a significant decrease in CD 68 serum levels, however, the P-PRP was more effective than the L-PRP. |
UROLOGICAL PRESENTATION OF PATIENTS WITH COVID-19 IN NINEVAH, IRAQOriginal articleAhmad Hameed Mohamad, Zaid Saaduldeen KhudhurMMSL 2024, 93(1):3-9 | DOI: 10.31482/mmsl.2023.014 Introduction: “Corona virus-induced disease (COVID-19)” is a highly infectious respiratory disease caused by the coronavirus (SARS-COV-2). In addition to respiratory symptoms, the infected people also experience urological symptoms such as renal impairment and lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS), which include frequency, urgency, loin pain, pyuria, and hematuria. Infertility and urolithiasis have also been detected in some patients. Objectives: To evaluate the effect of the coronavirus on the urinary system and its consequences on the affected patients. Methods: A prospective case series study was conducted in Mosul City, Iraq. One hundred COVID-19 patients, after a positive PCR result, confirmed their infection with the coronavirus, were evaluated clinically and sent for urine analysis and a renal function test. Results: Among the 100 patients studied, more males (56%) than females (44%) were affected by COVID-19. Patients in the 51–60 age range have the highest incidence of urinary symptoms, with loin pain being the most common symptom (52%) and frequency coming in second (51%). Regarding urine analysis, pus cells, RBCs, and protein were observed in 48, 24, and 24%, respectively. Renal function tests were abnormal in 55% of infected patients. Conclusion: The impact of the coronavirus on the urinary system differs from one patient to another. Patients who are elderly are severely affected, and urinary manifestations appear to be more prominent in this age group. Moreover, acute kidney injury may happen in some individuals, particularly those who are hospitalized, and the lower urinary tract infection may be accompanied by fever, dehydration, or a prolonged homestay. |
HISTOLOGICAL ASSESSMENT OF REMDESIVIR ON KIDNEY AND LIVER OF ALBINO RATS IN DIFFERENT DOSES AND THEIR WITHDRAWALOriginal articleRana M. Ahmad, Maha Al-SammakMMSL 2024, 93(1):10-18 | DOI: 10.31482/mmsl.2023.022 Background: Remdesivir has recently been used more widely as an antiviral medication, possibly due to its potency against coronavirus.Aim: This study was aimed at detecting the toxicity of remdesivir on the liver and kidneys of albino rats at various doses, as well as the possibility of recovering to the normal structure of these tissues two weeks after drug discontinuation. Methods: Forty adult albino rats were divided into five groups (8 rats per group). The first group was the control group; the second group received 5 mg/kg remdesivir; the third group received 10 mg/kg for five days; and the fourth and fifth groups were withdrawal groups (treated as 2nd and 3rd groups then left for two weeks). After five days of treatment, the animals of the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd groups were sacrificed, while the animals of the withdrawal groups were killed after two weeks of drug discontinuation. Both the liver and kidneys were removed and prepared for histological examination. Results: Remdesivir-treated liver and kidneys showed histological alterations such as blood vessel congestion, mononuclear cell infiltration, and localized hepatocyte degeneration. Meanwhile, kidney sections revealed localized vacuolation of the tubular epithelium, focal glomerular tuft shrinkage with Bowman's space dilatation. Conclusion: Remdesivir is hepatotoxic and nephrotoxic mainly, at high doses. Even after drug withdrawal, structural alterations persist, particularly at high dosages, confirming that remdesivir toxicity is dose-dependent. |
ACCESSIBILITY CHANGES AND THEIR PERCEPTION BY THE ELDERLY AFTER THE COVID-19 PANDEMICOriginal articlePetra Marešová, Lenka Komárková, Lucie Vítková, Miroslav Joukl, Zuzana Truhlářová, Jiří Horák, Ondřej KrejcarMMSL 2024, 93(1):19-28 | DOI: 10.31482/mmsl.2023.026 Introduction: Objective of this study is to describe impact of gender, age, social status, and geographic location on mobility changes during the COVID-19 pandemic within the Czechia, Hradec Kralove region, and Ostrava region. Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out in two regions in the Czechia: the Hradec Kralove region and the Ostrava region. Results: The age group of seniors 85 and older was more vulnerable to these alterations than other age groups. Age had a statistically significant impact on both the frequency of trips and the mode of transportation used. Seniors' shifts in mobility were more frequently impacted by urbanization, whereas the region's impact was seen in as many as five components. Transport, Route, and Time all showed the impact of urbanization. However, the region had the largest impact. Conclusion: There has been little evidence of the influence of age, gender, or social class on perceptions of changes during COVID-19. Research found conflicting evidence about older adults' physical activity throughout the epidemic. |
OVERVIEW OF DUHOK/IRAQ PROJECT OF EXPANDED NEWBORN SCREENINGOriginal articleFahad A. Jameel, Amer A. MeheMMSL 2024, 93(1):39-48 | DOI: 10.31482/mmsl.2022.057 Background: Newborn screening is a public health prevention system that intends to detect, early in life, a group of serious diseases that require early intervention. Institutionalizing and sustaining this system presents a remarkable challenge in developing public health systems. Duhok project for expanded newborn screening started in June 2018 with a panel of seven diseases including phenylketonuria (PKU), Galactosemia (GAL), congenital hypothyroidism (CHT), Cystic fibrosifcardiacs (CF), Congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH), G6PD deficiency and biotinidase deficiency. In the next few years, the panel expanded to include, finally, 72 tests, to detect various disorders of amino acids, fatty acid oxidation, organic acid, lysosomal storage disease, immunodeficiency, spinal muscular dystrophy, and others. Objectives: To evaluate the Duhok project of expanded newborn screening. Methods: In a retrospective cross-sectional study conducted between June 2018 and 31 November 2021, a total of 3872 newborns were screened from 8 governorates of Iraq and the Kurdistan region. Heel prick dry blood spot samples were obtained from all newborns for biochemical and immunoassay testing. Results: A total of 527 cases were detected, frequently detected disorders were Glucose 6 phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency, cystic fibrosis, congenital adrenal hyperplasia and phenyl ketone urea. Most of the positive cases (66%) were older than 7 days at screening. Conclusion: The article highlights the overview of the expanded newborn screening project in Duhok/Iraq. NBS has not yet become prevalent in Iraq, thus the screening for metabolic disorders is not normally requested until a patient is already experiencing symptoms. |
DAILY FATIGUE AMONG PATIENTS WITH OSTEOARTHRITIS: A CROSS-SECTIONAL STUDYOriginal articleZahraa S. Thabit, Harith Kh. Al-QazazMMSL 2024, 93(1):60-67 | DOI: 10.31482/mmsl.2023.007 Background and Aim: Osteoarthritis is a degenerative chronic disease that affects the joints, it is strongly associated with age and affects the quality of life and fatigue in addition to its associated pain, stiffness, and loss of mobility. This study aimed to evaluate the daily fatigue score among patients with osteoarthritis. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted among patients with osteoarthritis who were invited from three Rheumatology clinics. The fatigue scale (FACIT version) was used in addition to biochemical data collected from patients’ records.Result: A total of 370 patients were included in the final data analysis and a negative significant relationship between fatigue score with age, BMI, duration of the disease, and ESR (P<.0.05) were found. Significant differences in the fatigue scores were also found between groups of gender, glucosamine previous use, and former steroid injection. Conclusion: The severity of fatigue among osteoarthritis patients was higher in females than males. The medication used either analgesics or supplements for the patients with OA was not significant to improve the severity of fatigue. The severity of fatigue was more common in groups of patients that had one co-morbid than the patients who had more than one co-morbid. |
IN SILICO LIBRARY SCREENING TO FIND NOVEL ANTICANCER AGENT WITH CHEMOSENSITIZING PROPERTIES: FOCUS ON TARGETING ATAXIA TELANGIECTASIA AND Rad3 RELATED KINASEOriginal articleDarina Muthna, Tomas Kucera, Zbynek Vecera, Lukas Gorecki, Martin Andrs, Martina Rezacova, Jan KorabecnyMMSL 2024, 93(1):68-83 | DOI: 10.31482/mmsl.2023.009 To bypass the resistance to conventional chemotherapy, attention is paid to the inhibition of alternative targets such as members of the DNA damage response pathway. Among those 17 compounds, two proved antiproliferative efficacy in monotherapy, whereas ten compounds were effective in cisplatin co-treatment on the panel of ten different human cell lines. |
PSYCHOLOGICAL BURDEN AND METABOLIC SYNDROME IN PROFESSIONAL SOLDIERSOriginal articlePavla Krutisova, Vladimír Pavlik, Eva Cermakova, Jana Fajfrova, Dana FialovaMMSL 2024, 93(1):84-99 | DOI: 10.31482/mmsl.2023.010 The aim of the study is to investigate whether the mental stress resulting from the assignment of military professionals affects the parameters of metabolic syndrome (MetS) as a significant risk factor for cardio-vascular diseases. The study retrospectively analyses the data obtained during extended annual preventive examinations of professional soldiers in 2012-2016. The dataset was divided into two cohorts. The first "performance" cohort included soldiers from combat units and paratroopers (aiborne). The second cohort consisted of "others", i.e. soldiers from non-combat units or airborne. The psychological burden was determined by the soldiers' assignment to a combat or airborne units. In the years 2012-2016, almost all compared parameters were better in the "performance" group. Exceptions were a higher prevalence of overweight (according to body mass index) and sporadically higher glycaemia and alanine aminotrasferase (ALT) levels. When comparing years 2012 and 2016 of the “performace” group, statistically significant better values prevailed in relation to the MetS in 2016. The exceptions were ALT and uric acid levels. The outcome of this study suggests a better status of MetS risk factors and MetS-related factors in the "performance" cohort, and psychological stress did not augment MetS manifestations in these professionals. This study has confirmed the necessity of waist circumference measurement to eliminate overestimation of obesity in individuals with developed musculature. To confirm the hepatic origin of ALT, the medical history should include an inquiry about exercise habits. Subsequently, the effect of chronic stress may also be considered for higher liver enzymes. Screening for hypercholesterolaemia and hyperuricaemia has important clinical relevance for the prevention of cardiovascular diseases in younger population, particularly in those aged |
CORRELATION BETWEEN COVID-19 SYMPTOMS AND CERTAIN PHYSIOLOGICAL AND BODY COMPOSITION PARAMETERS RELATED TO OBESITY AND OVERWEIGHTOriginal articleAttila Novák, Szabolcs Szalánczi, Beatrix Hornyák, Zsófia Rázsó, Andrea Sótér, Csaba NyakasMMSL 2024, 93(1):112-119 | DOI: 10.31482/mmsl.2023.006 Introduction: The high Body Mass Index and high body fat percentage are mentioned as factors influencing the severity of the course of COVID-19 disease. Our aim was to examine, in relation to their symptoms, the measured and estimated parameters of those included in the lifestyle program established by the armed forces suffering from mild to moderate COVID-19 disease.Sample and Methods: The average age of the examined sample (n=18) was 45.2 years. The average body weight for women was (n=8) 78.5 kg, for men 106.2 kg, the average body fat percentage for women was 40.6% and for men 30.6%. The instruments used for the examination were a BIA 500 (800/µA, 50 kHz), an Omron BF 511 body composition monitor, an ECG Cardioscan monitor, and a DYNA-19 hand grip dynamometer. We applied a two-sample T-test in the examination. Differences with p < 0.05 were considered statistically. Statistical calculations were performed in R environment with R-Studio program. Results: The higher phase angle was characteristic at lower (p=0.04) and shorter (p=0.05) body temperatures. Higher body fat percentages were observed in the case of prolonged coughing (p=0.04). Lower cardiac function values were associated with higher fever (p=0.05) and difficulty in breathing (p=0.02), while higher cardiac stress percentage was associated with the appearance of chest pain (p=0.02) and higher fever (p=0.04).Conclusion: It was not the location of adipose tissue but the magnitude of its amount that was related to the symptoms of mild to moderate COVID-19 in our sample, in contrast to several international observations. |
EVALUATION OF CYTOKERATIN-19 EXPRESSION AND OXIDATIVE STRESS STATUS ON GINGIVAL WOUND HEALING OF RABBITS TREATED WITH OMEGA-3Original articleO. Kh. Mahmoud, J. K. Mammdoh, M. G. SaeedMMSL 2024, 93(1):131-139 | DOI: 10.31482/mmsl.2023.012 Background: Gingiva is a delicate tissue that protects alveolar bone against external stimuli. Gingival breaks expose alveolar bone, and the fast wounds heal the betterment of the teeth frame. We aimed to compare the influence of omega-3 on the gingival healing period after trauma and the potential involvement of cytokeratin-19 protein expression. Methods: A total of 18 rabbits were used, after trauma-induced, these rabbits were subdivided into three groups of 6 each. Group 1 is the control group that received normal saline only, the second group received omega 3 for 10 days before the trauma, while the third group received omega 3 supplements for 10 days before the gingival injury and continued receiving them for an additional 10 days afterwards. For each time point (third and seventh day of healing), 3 rabbits were sacrificed, and tissue was collected for total antioxidant capacity and malondialdehyde measurement. Tissue fixed for histopathology and immunohistochemistry analysis. Results: Omega 3 has shown improvement in the healing process regarding the period of healing, antioxidant parameters, and intensity of cytokeratin-19 expression compared to the control group. Moreover, rabbit groups exposed to omega 3 before trauma has shown better healing response compared to those initiated therapy with trauma. Conclusion: Omega 3 is notably beneficial when used for both prevention and treatment since it reduces oxidative stress and improves healing processes measured by increased expression of cytokeratin-19 in epithelial tissue. Omega 3 can therefore be thought of as a possible choice for the treatment of gingival wounds and gingivitis. |
EVALUATION OF FREE THYROXINE LEVEL AND BCL11A GENE POLYMORPHISM WITH BETA-THALASSEMIAOriginal articleMayssam M. Salih, Ahmed G. Al-Ziaydi, Aalan Hadi Al-zamiliMMSL 2024, 93(2):160-166 | DOI: 10.31482/mmsl.2023.018 Background: Thalassemia` is an autosomal recessive hereditary chronic hemolytic anaemia caused by a partial or total deficit in the production of β -globin chains that make up the main adult haemoglobin. Patients with the beta-thalassemia major have changes in thyroid function and result from thyroid function tests. The B-cell lymphoma /leukemia11A (BCL11A) gene is mainly located in the human chromosome 2p16.1 region; the BCL11A gene can regulate the expression of fetal haemoglobin. The aim: analysis of the association between beta-thalassemia and the BCL11A gene polymorphism in the Iraqi patient and to evaluate the effect of beta-thalassemia on the thyroid gland through the determination of free thyroxine concentration.Method: There were 150 participants in this study, split into two primary groups beta-thalassemia patients and healthy individuals. The result is measured using the ELISA for measurement of free thyroxine and polymerase chain reaction techniques for amplification of B-cell lymphoma /leukemia11A (BCL11A) gene polymorphism. Results: The findings showed a substantial drop in free thyroxine levels in beta-thalassemia patient groups as compared to the control group (P 0.01). The BCL11A gene has three alleles: homozygous CC, heterozygous TC, and homozygous TT. At (431 bais pair and 280 bais pair), (431 bais pair, 280 bais pair, and 195 bais pair), and (431 bais pair, and 195 bais pair), the bands appeared, respectively. The BCL11A rs11886868 gene is affected overall, and research into the causes of thalassemia found a substantial correlation between the BCL11A (rs 11886868) T and C-alleles and thalassemia (P-value = 0.004). The fact that these people have low serum thyroxine (T4) levels highlights the importance of routine screening to assess their endocrine function. |
MICRORNA-122 AS A BIOMARKER ASSOCIATED WITH OXIDATIVE STRESS IN PATIENTS SUFFERING FROM METABOLIC DISEASESOriginal articleRuqaya S. Reda, Nawal Khinteel JabbarMMSL 2024, 93(2):167-175 | DOI: 10.31482/mmsl.2023.020 Background: Recent evidence has shown that circulating microribonucleic acid (miRNA) has been related to many diseases either as an inhibitor or a stimulant factor, among them miRNA-122 which has proven through studies its relationship with insulin resistance, an adversative lipid profile, obesity, type 2 diabetes, and metabolic syndrome in several studies; however, the mechanisms involved are unknown. This study investigates the role of miRNA-122 expression in overweight patients suffering from metabolic disorders such as diabetes and hypertension and its relationship to the development of oxidative stress in patient groups.Materials and Methods: 30 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), 30 people with hypertension (HTN), 30 patients with T2DM+HTN, and 30 healthy persons who served as controls were enrolled in this study. An ARCHITECT c4000 clinical chemistry analyzer was used to assess lipid profiles. The sandwich immunodetection approach was used to assess whole blood hemoglobinA1c. By colorimetric methodology, catalase activity (CAT), superoxide dismutase activity (SOD), malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, and advanced oxidation protein products (AOPPs) levels were measured. The expression of serum miRNA-122 was determined using the quantitative polymerase chain reaction. Results: The activity of SOD and CAT in patient groups was found to be substantially lower than in the control group (p < 0.05), whereas MDA and AOPP concentrations were found to be significantly higher in patient groups compared to the control group (p < 0.05). When patient groups were compared to control groups, the miRNA-122 level was higher in the patients (p< 0.05).Conclusions: miRNA-122 expression is involved in the pathogenesis of T2DM and HTN-induced oxidative stress, there is a reciprocal relationship between the increase in gene expression of the miRNA-122 and the increase in oxidative stress accompanied by a decrease in the effectiveness of antioxidant enzymes, which leads to the development of the disease. |
PREVALENCE AND DISTRIBUTION OF RESISTANT GENES OF ANTIBIOTICS, HEAVY METALS AND BIOCIDES IN SOME ENTEROBACTERIA SPECIESOriginal articleSamir M. Khalaf, Muhsin A. EssaMMSL 2024, 93(2):188-192 | DOI: 10.31482/mmsl.2023.024 The problem of bacterial resistance to antibiotics has become a global issue and a major health challenge that requires continuous studies on how this resistance develops and spreads, and its relationship to resistance to other factors such as heavy metals and biocides. The current study aimed to determine the prevalence and distribution of antibiotics, heavy metals, and biocides-resistant genes on the chromosomes and plasmids of some Enterobacteria species. The results showed that antibiotics resistant genes (blaCTX, sul 1) were present in all isolates except for Klebsiella pneumoniae chromosome, while for heavy metals resistant genes, czcA detected in all isolates except for K. pneumoniae plasmid, ncc gene was only detected in the chromosome of Escherichia coli O157.H7 and E. coli, and plasmid of E. coli O157.H7. biocides gene (qacE∆1) was present in all isolates except for the E. faecalis chromosome. The current study resulted that the studied resistance genes spread clearly among the types of Enterobacteria, and this reflects the possibility of transmission of these genes among the bacteria present in this habitat. |
THE IMPACT OF ADHD ON THE PERFORMANCE OF THE PROFESSION OF A PROFESSIONAL SOLDIER AND OTHER RISK FACTORS INFLUENCING THE USE OF ADDICTIVE SUBSTANCES IN ADOLESCENCEOriginal articleSimona Sedláčková, Lidmila Hamplová, Vladimír PavlíkMMSL 2024, 93(2):199-205 | DOI: 10.31482/mmsl.2023.028 Background: ADHD syndrome is still at the forefront of discussed diagnoses in children, and is a continuing phenomenon even into adulthood. At the same time, the development of substance and non-substance addictions at an early age is a constant problem. The phenomenon of behavioral disorders, hyperactivity, impulsivity, and inattention, resulting from the immature development of brain centers in children, often brings with it persecution from pedagogues and educators. For both children and adults, there is no suggested therapeutic procedure, except for medication, although it is possible to work with the given disorder with an appropriate bio-psycho-social approach. Subsequently, the developmental deficit persists into adulthood. Objective: The main objective of the work was to reduce the stigmatization of addicted persons and to point out all developmental factors leading to addictive behavior, one of which is ADHD and its manifestations. One of the other goals is to draw attention to the importance of therapy for people with ADHD and to reduce medication to a minimum, if this can be achieved, and at the same time to emphasize this developmental deficit in the recruitment of professional soldiers. Methods: It was a retrospective collection and analysis of anamnestic data from medical records, and further data was obtained through a questionnaire survey. The data was evaluated based on established scales. The method of surveying the analyzed data by the coefficient in the maximum value. The resulting values were obtained by summing the points within the individual risk factors. Results: The highest score in the evaluation of the answers, and therefore the highest influence on the later use of addictive substances, had a psychiatric illness in childhood (point evaluation 351), in second place with a number of 295 points was a serious illness in childhood as a significant risk factor, followed by learning disabilities (277 points) and a low level of sports skills. Conclusion: The information obtained should initiate an increase in attention in the framework of preventive examinations in children, to the expansion of screening in the framework of gross motor skills, movement skills, and the implementation of therapeutic methods through frequent training in connection with the development of brain centers. At the same time, attention should be focused on the treatment of children with ADHD by amphetamine-containing substances, which should have a decreasing tendency and expand efforts to implement therapeutic methods and knowledge of preventive medicine, such as sufficient exercise, healthy diet, and calm family background, which will lead to improved relationships in families to achieve a reduction in anxiety states in children. |
THE CHINESE SURVEILLANCE SYSTEM OF COVID-19 DISEASE IN THE LIGHT OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCEReview articleKitti Nagy, Vanda BostikMMSL 2024, 93(2):224-230 | DOI: 10.31482/mmsl.2023.023 There are two key sources of data that contribute to biomedicine research: surveillance and questionnaires and interviews. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC, Atlanta, GA, USA) defines surveillance as the ongoing systematic collection, analysis, and interpretation of health data, essential to the planning, implementation, and evaluation of public health practice, closely integrated with the timely dissemination to those who need to know. The three things to keep in mind about surveillance systems are that they are ongoing (collecting information only once is not a surveillance system), the data collected are used (analyzed and interpreted) and finally, surveillance data is disseminated. There are several tangible applications of surveillance as a tool. For example, surveillance data can be used to establish public health priorities, aid in determining resource allocation and assess or evaluate public health programs. Surveillance data originate from many sources; therefore, standardization of surveillance practices is an ongoing challenge. For epidemiologists specifically, surveillance data can be used to determine a baseline for the detection of epidemics or for early detection of epidemics. This is clearly the positive meaning and impact of this system collecting sensitive population data. However, expression surveillance means in effect, supervision or control. The subsequent resulting regulations are the subject of reflection in this article. |
OXIDATIVE STRESS ALTERS THE THERAPEUTIC EFFECTS OF KETOROLAC IN THE CHICKS MODELOriginal articleRafal L. Abdulah, Yaareb J. MousaMMSL 2024, 93(3):247-254 | DOI: 10.31482/mmsl.2023.029 The purpose of the research consisted of assessing the modification produced by hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)-induced oxidative stress (OS) on the ketorolac therapeutic effects in the chickens which are the analgesic, antipyretic, and anti-inflammatory. A significant decrease in the total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) and subsequent occurrence of OS was observed in the stressed (H2O2) group on days 7th, 10th, and 14th by 39, 29, and 41%, respectively in comparison to the control (non-stressed) group. The analgesic effect of ketorolac in the stressed group had more intense in comparison to the non-stressed group, the analgesic effectiveness of ketorolac raised by 16% in that group. In the non-stressed and stressed groups, ketorolac produces its antipyretic effect at 3 and 4 hours after fever induction by baker’s yeast while it shows the effect significantly at 1, 2, and 4 hours. Furthermore, ketorolac has the superiority of antipyretic action in stressed group over the non-stressed group. Ketorolac carries out anti-inflammatory activity in the stressed and non-stressed groups by 61 and 75%, respectively. Ketorolac has a significant anti-inflammatory property in the stressed group through a significant decrease in the delta thickness compared to the non-stressed group. The stressed group was treated with ketorolac for five consecutive days signifi-cantly affect the kidney and liver function concerning the non-stressed group. The net findings proposed the ability of H2O2-induced OS to alter ketorolac’s analgesic, antipyretic, and anti-inflammatory properties in the chickens thus, it is recommended to reduce the dose of ketorolac intended to be given to stressed animals involved. |
MICROEMULSION: A POTENTIAL APPROACH FOR TRANSDERMAL DELIVERY OF SILDENAFIL CITRATEOriginal articleAli Alazzo, Mohanad Alfahad, Mahmood H. M. Jasim, Radhwan Nidal Al-ZidanMMSL 2024, 93(3):255-263 | DOI: 10.31482/mmsl.2023.031 Sildenafil citrate has low oral bioavailability, systemic adverse effects, and a relatively delayed action. These issues may be addressed through direct transdermal delivery to the penis. This study aims to investigate the microemulsion formulation of the drug for effective transdermal delivery. Sildenafil citrate was formulated as a microemulsion using clove oil, dimethyl sulphoxide, phosphate buffer (pH 7), propylene glycol, Tween®80, and distilled water. Different proportions of these components were used to create six formulations of the microemulsion (F1–F6), which were then characterised by their physical appearance and clarity, pH, viscosity, conductivity, percent transmission, and droplet size. Furthermore, the stability, content analysis, in-vitro drug release, and transdermal permeation of sildenafil citrate from the generated drug-loaded microemulsions were studied. All prepared formulas contained nano-sized oil droplets (less than 20 nm), and the pH values were within the range of skin pH; however, two formulas were not transparent. Additionally, all formulations were thermodynamically stable, passing freeze-thaw, heating-cooling, and centrifugation tests. Next, the formulas demonstrated zero-order release kinetics, indicating that they can provide a sustained release profile for sildenafil citrate. Finally, the microemulsion formulation exhibited a 2.8-fold enhancement in skin permeation compared with that of the sildenafil citrate suspension. The prepared microemulsions demonstrated beneficial physical properties and skin permeation profiles that are promising for the local administration of sildenafil citrate. |

One of these is miRNA-22, which research has connected to oxidative stress and thyroid issues. However, the underlying mechanisms are unknown. This study investigates the expression of miRNA-22 in hypothyroid women and its relationship to the rise in oxidative stress in the patient population.Materials and Methods: 40 women patients with Hypothyroid and 40 in this study, healthy volunteers who served as controls were included. The levels of serum luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) were measured by sandwich assay, while free triiodothyronine (FT3) and thyroxine (T4) levels were measured competitive binding immunoenzymatic assay. To assess lipid profiles, an automated analyzer was employed. By enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), Interleukin 6 (IL-6) levels were measured. Malondialdehyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase activity (SOD), catalase activity (CAT), and advanced oxidation protein products (AOPPs), and assessed using a colorimetric technique. The quantitative polymerase chain reaction was used to evaluate the expression of serum miRNA-22.Results: Significantly more SOD and CAT activity was identified in patient groups than in the control group (P<0.05), also the patient group's AOPP and MDA concentrations were discovered to significantly outweigh those of the control group. (P< 0.05). IL-6 levels were significantly higher in the patient group than in (P<0.05) the control group. The level of miRNA-22 was higher in the sick group as compared to the control groups (P<0.05).Conclusions: The pathophysiology of oxidative stress brought on by hypothyroidism involves miRNA-22 expression, there is a reciprocal relationship between the increase in gene expression of the miRNA-22 and the increase in oxidative stress, which results in the disease's development. |
AUTOLOGOUS FAT REINJECTION AFTER PRESERVATION AT −2 TO −18°C: A CLINICAL STUDY OF 973 PATIENTSOriginal articleMohammad Salman Saeed, Qasim S. Al Chalabi, Husam Ali SalmanMMSL 2024, 93(3):288-296 | DOI: 10.31482/mmsl.2023.035 Objective: To study the efficacy of autologous fat transplantation after preservation at −2 to −18°C in a domestic refrigerator.Patients and methods: This study was conducted in a private clinic from December 2017 to December 2021. A total of 973 female patients were included. Under a full aseptic technique, fat was harvested using a 4 mm suction blunt cannula with three longitudinal slits. Three 50 mL syringes of fat were obtained before transferring it to 10 mL syringes; then, the fat was centrifuged at 3500 rpm for 1 min and injected through an 18 gauge blunt cannula. In addition, 50 mL of fat without centrifugation was stored in a domestic refrigerator for 3 weeks to be reinjected after fast thawing for 20 min, and then centrifuged to be ready for the second session. All participants had follow-up visits at 3 weeks, 6 months, and 1 year. Results: Participants ranged in age from 18 to 65 years. The abdomen was the fat donor site in 63.3% of the patients, while round-face style augmentation was performed in 48.3% of the patients. An assessment at 3 weeks revealed that 84.1% of patients required a second session. After 6 months, on an assessment using a 10-point scale, patients who received a single session and a second session scored 6.05 and 7.46, respectively. At 1 year, the assessment scores were 5.65 and 7.12 for those with a single and second session, respectively, and 60% of patients were fully satisfied. Conclusion: Autologous fat preserved in a domestic refrigerator for 3 weeks is a safe, cheap, and tolerated filler for facial augmentation. |

The herb is used to treat heart issues, fever, anemia, wounds, and ulcerated sores. It is applied topically to treat skin issues, while the plant’s decoction is frequently taken orally to address a wide range of ailments. Psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis, diarrhea, urinary tract infections, dysentery, malaria, psoriasis, allergies, asthma, tinnitus, nausea, vomiting, and neuralgia are just a few of the health benefits that P. hysterophorus L. can provide. Asthma, bronchitis, dermatitis, and hay fever are some of the major problems caused by this weed, which is harmful to all living things because it also depletes nutrient levels and competes with the cultivation of major crops and vegetation. This review discusses the potential health benefits as well as the origin, distribution, morphology, and harmful effects of the plant on human health. |
USE OF LOW TITRE O WHOLE BLOOD IN THE CZECH REPUBLICMeeting abstractsMiloš Bohoněk, Dominik KutáčMMSL 2024, 93(88):1-3 Background: Massive bleeding is a leading cause of death in polytrauma, especially in young people. Traumatic hemorrhagic shock in adults has a mortality approaching 20% at 24 hours post-injury. High morbidity and mortality is caused by the „lethal diamond“ – hypothermia, acidosis, hypocalcemia and trauma induced coagulopathy. Using early hemostatic resuscitation procedures can in many cases improve survival. In the last two decades the evidence for the lifesaving benefits of Low Titre Group O Whole Blood (LTOWB) in bleeding trauma patients has increased in both the prehospital settings as well as in hospital. .... |
