Zejména bakterie, cyanobakterie, houby a rostliny často inkorporují β-aminokyseliny do svých sekundárních metabolitů.

Unlike proteinogenic α-amino acids that are constituents of all proteins and enzymes, which control the metabolism in living matter, β-amino acids are less abundant than their α-isomers. Mostly they occur as constituents of distinct natural products, such as peptides, cyclopeptides, depsipeptides, glycopeptides, alkaloids or terpenoids. Especially, bacteria, cyanobacteria, fungi, and plants often incorporate β-amino acids into their secondary metabolites. These serve as tools to secure their survival in competition with other organisms. Therefore, these compounds are often characterized by potent biological activities which are often based on their β-amino acid substructures. The most important β-amino acids are β-alanine, β-leucine, β-lysine, β-arginine, β-glutamate, β-phenylalanine and β-tyrosine. Natural derivatives of β-phenylalanine and β-tyrosine are the aim of this article.
