THE END STAGE RENAL DISEASE TREATMENT MODEL

Karel Antoš, Hana Skalská, Bruno Ježek, Miroslav Procházka, Roman Prymula

VZL 2003, 72(1):5-9

This study describes the model which permits the cost-utility analysis ofend stage renal disease. The aim of this model is to permit the evaluation ofapproaches to the care ofpatients with end stage renal disease based on the epidemiological data, discovered utility characteristics of diseases and cost data from the insurance companies. The modelpresented evaluates the impacts ofhypothetical scenarios -the increase and decrease in transplanted organs and the increase in the perceived quality ofcarefor dialyzedpatients in the Czech Republic.

AN ATTEMPT AT SUICIDE WITH DRUGS BY A SOLDIER PARTICIPATING IN A MILITARY MISSION ABROAD

Petr Lipavský

VZL 2003, 72(1):10-14

A case report of a participant in a military mission abroad is presented in this article. The confusion condition occurred after a state of convulsion. Inflammation aetiology, including meningitis or meningoencephalitis, brain haemorrhage or tumourprocess in the brain, were considered in the differential diagnosis. CT diagnosis of the supraselar expansion was evaluated as an occasional finding; inflammation aetiology was excluded. The aetiology was unclear until the spontaneous improvement of the condition — the patient disclosed that he had tried to commit suicide by ingestion of a sleeping pill. The depressive syndrome was...

HUPERZINE A: A PROSPECTIVE PROPHYLACTIC ANTIDOTE AGAINST ORGANOPHOSPHATE NERVE AGENTS. CAPILLARY ELECTROPHORESIS DETERMINATION

Eladia M. Pena-Méndez, Tomáš Hottmar, Josef Havel, Jiří Patočka

VZL 2003, 72(1):15-20

A new, highly sensitive capillary zone electrophoresis methodfor determination of huperzine A, a perspective prophylactic antidote against militarily important nerve agents and anti-Alzheimer's disease drug, was developed. Huperzine A is an alkaloid isolated from the Chinese club moss Huperzia serrata. The absorption spectra and electrophoretic behaviour of the compound were studied. The compound shows two absorption maxima (λmax 230 and 310 nm). The protonation constant was determined by spectrophotometry and capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE) and the recommended value is pK = 7.70 ± 0.07. A CZE method for the determination...

THE IMPORTANCE OF KETAMINE, AN ANAESTHETIC AGENT, IN THE MILITARY MEDICAL SERVICE

Josef Fusek, Vladimír Měrka

VZL 2003, 72(1):24-31

Ketamine, in spite of its undesirable side effects (especially hallucinations), is the means of choice for total intravenous anaesthesia under field conditions. The authors propose to change the present racemic ketamine for the more efficient dextrorotary isomer; S-ketamine in our field equipment.

THE INCIDENCE OF RISK CARDIOVASCULAR FACTORS IN MEDICAL STUDENTS IN A TIME SEQUENCE

Kvetoslava Rimárová, K. Bernasovská, G. Holéczyová

VZL 2003, 72(1):32-36

The paper presents time trends in cardiovasculardisease risk factors. This paper shows the results of 4 cross-sectional studies of medical students from 1996 to 1999. The analysis includes data from 298 males and 440 females. The evaluated risk factors include: BMI (Body Mass Index), body fat percentage, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, plus total and HDL blood cholesterol. From the time trend results it is possible to evaluate the negative increase in total blood cholesterol, variation of the HDL cholesterol and the BMI male increasing trend. As a positive factor an increasing time for physical activity, low arithmetic mean values of blood pressure...

PRESENT KNOWLEDGE ABOUT GALANTHAMINE AS A REVERSIBLE ACETYLCHOLINESTERASE INHIBITOR

Gabriela Krejčová, Lucie Ševelová

VZL 2003, 72(1):37-44

This article presents recent knowledge about galanthamine, its Structure, its pharmacodynamic as well as pharmacokinetic properties, its cognitive, behavioral and toxic efiects, and the methods of its determination in biological substances. _ This alkaloid is olatedfrom the Amaryllidaceae plant family acts as a reversible selective competitive acetylcholinesterase inhibitor and it also allosterically modulates the nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, thereby potentiates cholinergic, nicotinic neurotransmission. In medicine is has already been used since the 1960s, mainly in Eastern Europe to stop neuromuscular blockade and in neurological defect...
