AVIATION MEDICAL ASSESSMENT - HISTORY AND SPECIFICITY OF ITS ADVANCEMENT AT THE INSTITUTE OF AVIATION MEDICINE IN PRAGUE
Antonin Dvořák, Oldřich Truska, Jozef Vanko
VZL 2003, 72(2):47-50
The authors give a historical overview of the development of aviation medical assessment in Czechoslovakia from the 1920s to the present. The medical assessment of aviators has always been tightly connected with preventive measures and treatment procedures of the Institute of Aviation Medicine, delivered to military and civilian flying personnel. The main working activity of this discipline has been the selection of applicants for flight training and the selection of pilots, appropriate for retraining in supersonic aeroplanes. It has also been engaged in the problems of early diagnostics, treatment, preventive measures and of flight...
AVIATION MEDICAL ASSESSMENT IN THE CZECH REPUBLIC - ITS EVOLUTION AND ISSUES
Antonin Dvořák, Oldřich Truska, Jozef Vanko
VZL 2003, 72(2):51-54
The authors analyse the main problems of medical assessment in aviation medicine with special emphasis on its evolution during the past 10-15 years. Medical assessment of an applicant’s fitness issued in the form of a relevant class medical certificate has a predictive character because it confirmes that the holder of the certificate can exercise the privileges of the related licence subject to any limitations or conditions shown over the entire period of the certificate ’s validity. The authors discuss waiver problems in pilots with revealed health disorders, the importance of modern diagnostic and therapeutic...
SOME REMARKS ON THE PERSPECTIVES OF AVIATION MEDICINE
Jiří Šulc
VZL 2003, 72(2):55-58
The author analyses world-wide trends in aviation medicine which at the beginning of the 3rd millennium shall principally aflect the appearance of this medical discipline even in the Czech Republic. Its fundamentals in forthcoming decades will, no doubt, remain under the defence branch. Changes must reinforce the academic base of aviation medicine and facilitate the maximum concentration of its specialists on solving aviation's requirements in a qualified way. In the course of the re-organisation and transformation process, the specific character of this discipline cannot be ignored. Its assimilation by other medical structures should...
A COMPARISON OF THE MEDICAL EXAMINATION RESULTS BETWEEN A GROUP OF PILOTS AND THE GENERAL CZECH POPULATION
Oldřich Truska, Ludvík Cettl
VZL 2003, 72(2):59-62
Since 1953 the Institute of Aviation Medicine in Prague has carried out the selection and periodical examination' Of flying personnel. Since 1998 we have also organised the examination of small groups (of about 20 people) of non-flying personnel, usually managers, during weekends. The range of such examinations is very similar to that for pilots. We compared the examination results of military pilots, civilian pilots and managers. To be able to compare these three groups, we devided them into subgroups according to their age. We evaluated the age subgroups 21-30, 31-40, 41-50, and 51-60 and compared the data which we could express in a...
AN EVALUATION OF THE EFFECTIVENESS OF HYPERTENSION TREATMENT IN AVIATION PERSONNEL: PERSPECTIVES AND THE PRESENT SITUATION
Miroslav Rada, Renata Živná
VZL 2003, 72(2):63-67
A small group offlying personnel examined at the Department of Functional Diagnostics and Clinical Physisology during the year 2002 was subjected to the Shellong test. Based on the analysis of the results, the authors tried to point some circumstances and well-known facts when selecting a particular kind of antihypertensive drug (and with respect to its full activity as well). Furthermore, they emphasized the need to revise the algorithm used so far in terms of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics respectively, with regard to clinical cardiology experience and practice. After all, their views have been supported by many retrospective and prospective...
NEW DEPICTING METHODS IN CURRENT GLAUCOMA DIAGNOSTICS
Dušan Bartoš
VZL 2003, 72(2):68-71
Examination of the retinal nervous tissue layer and its intrapapillary equivalent of the neuroretinal border of the optic nerve disc by laser scanning opthalmoscopy using the Heidelberg retinal tomograph presently represents the most rational and effective method when searching for latent glaucoma disease. The first changes in the retinal nerve tissue layer area and the neuroretinal border of the optic nerve disc are possible to diagnose as early as a few years before the occurrance of changes in the field of vision which are already irreversible at that time. By including this examination in the examining method algorithm for the evaluation...
AEROMEDICAL TRAINING OF FLIGHT PERSONNEL AND PARACHUTISTS IN THE CZECH ARMY
Petr Došel
VZL 2003, 72(2):72-76
The author defines the concept of aeromedical training (AMT) for Czech Army flight personnel and provides a survey of its normative basis and of the assigned target groups. Information is given about the itemisation of the training which depends on the type of aviation techniques flown, as well as on the contents of the theoretical measures, the practical drill and the demonstrations, respectively. Individual methods are characterized in brief. A currently valid ATM Scheme is presented.
THE USE OF HYPERBARIC OXYGEN THERAPY IN MILITARY CASUALTIES, INTOXICATION AND INJURIES
Miloš Sázel, Petr Došel, Vladimír Doležal
VZL 2003, 72(2):77-81
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO2) is an important therapeutic method used all over the world and as well as in the Czech Republic. Oxygen breathed inside a hyperbaric chamber contributes to the healing of impaired tissue. HBO2 indication has a few degrees of urgency but the indication of this treatment is vital in some diagnoses. Its use in wartime conditions is particularly presumed for treatment of CO intoxication, gaseous gangrene, traumatic shock, compartment and crush syndrome, burns and chronic osteomyelitis. The experiences of some authors with HBO2 are summarized, and the values of overpressure and the time Of...
