The Mode of QT Interval Expression Changes Statistical Significance of Differences

Štefan Kujaník, Miroslav Mikulecký, Amália Valachová

VZL 2004, 73(5):161-165

The electrocardiographic QT interval (electric systole) is a demonstration of heterogeneity of ventricular repolarization and one of the indicators of cardiac electrical stability. Its prolongation (QTc > 440 ms) acts proarrhythmically.Aim: to investigate the statistical significance of QT differences according to the mode of QT expression in young healthy persons. Results: The smallest statistical significance of differences was at QT in uncorrected (measured) form, higher at corrected QTc form, the highest at uncorrected QT together with its heart rate processed by Hotelling statistics. Conclusion: The mode of QT expression can substantially influence...

A Moderate Altitude and Cardiac Arrhythmias in Healthy Males of Above 50 Years of Age

Štefan Kujaník, Marián Sninčák, Juraj Podracký, Ján Vokáľ, Juraj Kovaľ

VZL 2004, 73(5):166-172

A moderate altitude (1.000-3.000 m) can be one of the risk factors of cardiac arrhythmias, mainly at a higher age and for people who permanently live in a lowland.Aim of the study: To monitor a 24-hour periodicity of supraventricular (SVPB) and ventricular extrasystoles (VEB) in a lowland and a moderate altitude and to monitor their occurrence during the cable cabin ascent in healthy males of above 50 years of age. Methods: 96 healthy males of above 50 years of age were studied - 45 men in the lowland (Košice 211 m), 31 at Štrbské Pleso (1.350 m) and 20 during the cable cabin transportation from Tatranská Lomnica (898 m) to Lomnický Štít (2.632 m) and...

Medical Support to the Czech and Later the Czech-Slovak Unit During the Enduring Freedom Operation in Kuwait from 2002 to 2003

Petr Lipavský

VZL 2004, 73(5):174-183

This article is based on the knowledge gained during the deployment of the Czech and later the Czech-Slovak Military Unit of Radiation, Chemical and Biological Protection during the Enduring Freedom operation in the territory of Kuwait from 2002 to 2003. The individual areas of medical service activities are described and evaluated here. Based on this evaluation recommendations for improving medical service work in cases of deployment on similar missions abroad have been elaborated.

Non-lethal Chemical Weapons and the Convention on Prohibition of Chemical Weapons

Ladislav Středa, Jiří Patočka

VZL 2004, 73(5):184-193

Non-lethal weapons are a combat means and weapon systems which put a human being out of combat action or other purposeful activity by causing physical or mental disablement. If chemical agents are the means of temporary incapacitation, these substances are known as non-lethal chemical agents and weapons based on this principle are known as non-lethal chemical weapons. A temporary incapacitation without a serious damage to health is a primary effect of these weapons. In this article the development of non-lethal chemical weapons is discussed in relation to the Convention on Prohibition of Chemical Weapons.

Radiation-Induced Enteritis - Part I

Daniel Driák, Jan Österreicher

VZL 2004, 73(5):194-207

Radiation-induced enteritis is a form of acute radiation disease which develops after the absorbtion of a dose of 8 Gy or higher. It is an absolutely lethal clinical-pathological unit, enteritis necro-hemorrhagica, whose causal therapy is unknown. This article contains the definition of this disease and its pathogenetic mechanisms at all the levels of development.
