The Czech Army 6th Field Hospital was in operation abroad in I999 for a period of less than 29 weeks. It was deployed there as a medical echelon during the NATO peacekeeping operation in Albania. As a Role 2+ hospital it provided medical and logistical aid to refugees from Kosovo. At the same time, it provided care to NATO soldiers participating in this operation. When the work in Albania was over, the hospital moved to Turkey to help the victims of the earthquake. The article defines the specific characteristics and problems of the work of a psychologist in a military unit - a field hospital abroad. The author states his experience with the treatment of mental disorders of patients affected by the humanitarian crisis during the Kosovo conflict. At the same time, he compares and states the results of psychotherapy in homeless persons who lost their property and relatives due to the earthquake in Turkey.
ACUTE REACTION TO STRESS AND POSTTRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER

The ability to manage stress reaction is influenced by individual vulnerability and the fimction of defence mechanisms which are different in each individual. If these defence mechanisms fail the acute stress reaction develops. Posttraumatic disorder contrary to acute stress reaction develops as a response to stressful situation and its symptoms can appear even a few months after the event which caused it. But the affected person can only be a witness without being personally involved in the traumatic situation as for example members of a rescue team and medical workers.

The article analyses epidemic of diarrhoeal disease in the Czech Army 6th Field Hospital personnel during their stay in Turkey. This epidemic was caused by the unusual conditionally pathogenic agent Providencia alcalifaciens. The inception of the epidemic was influenced by the breaking of hygienic and antiepidemic standards and the way of life infield conditions.
