INFECTIOUS MORBIDITY OF CZECH ARMY CAREER SOLDIERS FROM 1993 TO 2000

František Machula, Josef Helma

VZL 2002, 71(3):93-96

This article presents a brief analysis of the infectious morbidity of Czech Army career soldiers from 1993 to 2000 with a focus on regularly monitored diseases, sporadic infectious morbidity and morbidity in epidemiological foci. It describes the contribution so far of military professionals to the whole spectrum of infectious morbidity in the army and points out the expected changes in structure and infectious morbidity levels in connection with the transformation to a fully professionalized army. It considers the most frequent infections which can possibly occur in career soldiers during their operations in our country.

CANCER STENOSIS OF THE DUODENUM (A CASE HISTORY)

Ladislav Slováček

VZL 2002, 71(3):97-100

The author prepared for the presentation a case history of a pacient with a rare cancer of the duodenum. The case report points out that even if the malignant tumours of the small intestine occur very rarely (1 % of all gastrointestinal tumours) and that their clinical symptomology is less characteristic, it is necessary to consider them in differential diagnosis.

A PHYSICAL MODEL OF SOFT BIOLOGICAL TISSUES (SOFT "HOMOGENOUS STRUCTURES") AND ITS APPLICATION TO A BALLISTIC EXPERIMENT

Ludvík Juříček, Jan Komenda

VZL 2002, 71(3):106-114

This paper deals with the physical model application to a ballistic experiment as an integral part of the evaluation of the woundability effect of small calibre ammunition. The model was made from a 75:25 % petrolatum — parafin mixture which we designed ourselves. This physical model makes it possible to catch the entire fire channel; its application, according to the suggested methodology, is of crucial importance considering the expected bullet wound prediction, the fire channel shape and the typical size for ranging.

CURRENT KNOWLEDGE ABOUT CYCLOSPORINE A

Gabriela Krejčová, Josef Herink

VZL 2002, 71(3):115-120

This article briefly Summarizes current knowledge about cyclosporine A, its pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamíc properties, its effects on organs, tissues, cells as well as its transmembrane transmissions. It also deals with the influence of cyclosporine A on other substances or drugs. Owing to its properties, we can suppose that there will be an increased use of this drug in civilian as well as military medicine than there is at the present time.

THE INFLUENCE OF DIAZEPAM ON THE ANTIDOTAL TREATMENT-INDUCED ELIMINATION OF THE ACUTE LETHAL EFFECTS OF TABUN IN MICE

Jiří Kassa

VZL 2002, 71(3):121-125

The influence of the anticonvulsive drug diazepam on the ability of basic antidotal treatment of poisoning with nerve agents, consisting of anticholinergic drugs and acetylcholinesterase reactivators, to decrease the lethal effects of the chosen nerve agent (tabun) was demonstrated in experiments on mice. The influence of diazepam was evaluated by the comparison of the medium lethal dose values (LD50) of tabun in the case of 24h surviving tabun-exposed mice, treated with the basic antidotes involving various types of anticholinergic drugs and acetylcholinesterase reactivators, with the LD50 values of tabun in mice treated...

THREE-DIMENSIONAL CONFORMAL RADIOTHERAPY OF PROSTATE CANCER: TREATMENT TECHNIQUE, ACUTE TOXICITY

Karel Odrážka

VZL 2002, 71(3):126-130

Background and Purpose: To compare conformal and conventional irradiation techniques and to evaluate acute toxicity in patients treated by three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy (3D-CRT) for localized prostate cancer.Materials and Methods: Treatment plans were created in 10 patients for the conformal and conventional techniques. The expositions of the organs at risk were compared in both techniques using dose-volume histograms. The acute toxicity was evaluated in 116 patients treated with 3D-CRT for localized prostate cancer. Acute gastrointestinal (G1) and genitourinary (GU) symptoms were graded according to the EORTC/RTOG scoring system.

ASSESSMENT OF ENERGY AND NUTRITIONAL VALUE OF FOOD RATIONS USED FOR ALIMENTATION OF SOLDIERS SERVING MILITARY SERVICE OUTSIDE POLAND

Jerzy Bertrandt, Anna Klos, Eugeniusz Rozmysl

VZL 2002, 71(3):134-136

Soldiers’ military service in Peace Keeping Missions outside Poland is related to staying in different climate conditions and doing special combat duties. Proper nutrition of Polish soldiers serving abroad is one of the fundamental elements allowing keeping good health state and high psychophysical condition. Soldiers’ nutrition manner requires taking into consideration both different climate and service conditions, because these elements may significantly influence on daily energy expenditure, and consequently change of nutritional requirements (1, 2, 3, 4).
