Mass Incidence of Mumps in Military Population of the Czech Army
František Machula, František Beňa, Jiří Švamberg
VZL 2004, 73(4):121-123
At the beginning of 2003 a mass incidence of epidemic parotitis was recorded in military population of the Czech Army after more than 20 years. Due to an epidemiological situation when the vaccination was introduced in the Czech Republic in 1987 there was a transfer of morbidity peak to the age group of above 15 years of age. Due to this we can expect more frequent incidence of this disease in both compulsory military service soldiers and young military professionals in the coming years. Considering that epidemic parotitis can have more severe symptoms in adulthood than in childhood, the authors of this article remind us of the basic characteristics...
Acute Coronary Syndrome and Heart Insufficiency Biomarkers

In the recent years myocardial damage biomarkers have been the most rapidly developing part of clinical biochemistry. Implementation of new myocardial markers has been very fast, mostly without profound clinical and analytical experience. During a short period of time, new methods concerning determination of myoglobin, troponins, CKMB mass concentration, hs CRP, BNP, NT-proBNP and IMA and other methods have been introduced. These testing methods essentially change our view of diagnostics, prognosis and optimal therapy of acute coronary syndromes. The determination of some myocardial damage biomarkers as, for example, cTn1 is not synchronized in assays...
Primary Hypertension Pathogenesis
Marián Sninčák, Štefan Kujaník
VZL 2004, 73(4):130-141
Primary hypertension is the most common chronic disease in industrialized countries. Primary hypertension pathogenesis still remains unclear. However, it is probably a "multifactorial" disease, influenced by various environmetal factors in interaction with a so far undetermined genetic predisposition. A particular diagnosis can only be made through the exclusion of a secondary cause.A small percentage of secondary forms of hypertension in the total population of patients with hypertension justifies us to search for an organically tangible cause of this disease. Any suspicion should correspond with the observance of a standard diagnostic procedure and...
The Effect of Repeated Antidotal Treatment on Tabun-Induced Toxicity in Mice
Jiří Kassa
VZL 2004, 73(4):142-144
Male NMRI mice were used to test the effect of single or repeated antidotal treatment with various oximes (pralidoxime, obidoxime, trimedoxime, the oxime HI-6) in combination with an anticholinergic drug atropine on the acute toxicity of organophosphorus tabun compound with the help of evaluating medial lethal (LD50) dose at a 24-hour survival of tabun-poisoned experimental animals. If some of the tested oximes in combination with atropine were administered repeatedly during acute tabun intoxication, a slight increase in the LD50 value was observed compared to a single administration when pralidoxime or obidoxime was used as an acetylcholinesterase...
Sarafotoxins - a Potential Instrument of Terrorism?

VZL 2004, 73(4):145-149
Venomous snakes of the Atractaspididae family produce sarafotoxins in their venomous glands which can cause a lethal intoxication in humans by their vasoconstrictive and cardiotoxic effects. Sarafotoxins are peptides and they have structure and pharmacologic properties similar to endothelins. Endothelins are important bioregulators in animals and humans.Recently expressed opinions concerning potential misuse of endothelins as bioterrorism agents are also valid for sarafotoxins. Therefore officials responsible for bioterrorism control ought to pay adequate attention to these substances.
