Risk of the Statin Therapy

Miroslav Brndiar, Lucie Chadimová, Ladislav Jebavý, Jan M. Horáček, Martina Prixová

VZL 2007, 76(4):117-122

In the retrospective study an incidence of undesirable effects of the statin therapy was observed. In the whole group (n = 120) undesirable effects appeared in 18 ill people, i.e. in 15 % of the cases. Most of them were only slight and it was not necessary to interrupt the therapy. Significant difference in incidence of undesirable effects between simvastatin (n = 60) and lovastatin (n = 60) was not proved. Further the effectiveness of both types of statins on the lipid spectrum was observed. Not even in this case the significant difference in effectiveness among these types of statins on general cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol and triacylglycerols...

Primary Torsion of the Omentum Imitating Acute Appendicitis - A Case Report

Petr Lochman, Robert Čáp, Daniel Dobeš

VZL 2007, 76(4):123-124

Torsion of the omentum is a rare cause of acute abdomen. In most cases, it is presented with the same symptoms like acute appendicitis. Usually, the correct diagnosis is not made until the operation. The presence of serosanguineous fluid in the peritoneal cavity and normal appendix can alert the surgeon to the possibility of omental torsion. The treatment consists in excision of the affected portion of the omentum. The authors present a case report of a young man operated on for signs of acute appendicitis where primary omental torsion with a multiple rotation 900 degrees in anticlockwise direction was the cause of acute abdomen.

CBRN JAT: NATO Response Force's Advising Body in CBRN Issues as a Common Interest of Military Health Service and CBRN Troops of the Czech Armed Forces

Jan Österreicher, Jan Smetana, Vratislav Osvald

VZL 2007, 76(4):138-140

An article describes the role, structure, fullfiled tasks, work limitation as well as training aims of the Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear Joint Assessment Team (CBRN JAT). Subsequently, herein there are expressed systematic proposals concerning CBRN and Military health services based on authors experience in this particular team during the 8th rotation of NATO Response Force (NRF-8).

Possibilities of Development of New Chemical Weapons in the Light of Existing Chemical Weapons Convention

Jiří Bajgar

VZL 2007, 76(4):141-147

Conditions and directions of possible development of new chemical compounds usable for military purposes are characterized and focused on the groups of toxic agents in question. Non-lethal chemical weapons are also mentioned.

Biosensors for Biological Agents' Detection

Miroslav Pohanka

VZL 2007, 76(4):148-152

The biosensors for biological agents are mentioned in this review. After biosensor definition separate biosensors are introduced according to their physiochemical transducers. Electrochemical biosensors are further divided into potentiometric, amperometric and conductometric ones. Optical biosensors are presented as based on chromogen and/or nonlinear optics ones. Finally the piezoelectric biosensors are mentioned.

Detection of Ricin with Biosensors and ELISA: A Review

Petr Procházka

VZL 2007, 76(4):153-157

The main aim of this work is to summarize the information about the most common methods for detection of ricin. Ricin is a phytotoxin produced by castor plant, Ricinus communis. It is known as ribosome-inactivating protein because it inhibits the proteosynthesis. It can be abused for terrorist actions or it can cause very serious intoxication, either accidental or murder and suicide. Therefore there is an urgent need to have a reliable, specific and selective detection method. This paper offers information about enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and biosensors. The magnetoelastic immunosensor and the fiber-optic based biosensor are represented...

Epidemiological Risks of Vaccination against Variola at the Present Time: Contact Transmission of Vaccinia virus

Miroslav Špliňo, Roman Prymula, Roman Chlíbek

VZL 2007, 76(4):158-161

The authors describe the present state of vaccination against variola in the non-epidemic period. They put forward the indication criteria, the recommended vaccination for persons working with vaccinia virus, and the case description of a severe complication of eczema vaccinatum after contact transmission of vaccinia virus from father to son (vaccinated army member).
