A Comparison of the Neuroprotective Efficacy of Newly Synthesized Oximes (K250, K251) and Oximes Introduced into the Czech Army (Obidoxime, HI-6) in Tabun-Poisoned Rats

Jiří Kassa, Jana Žďárová Karasová, Sandra Tesařová, Kamil Musílek, Kamil Kuča, Jiří Bajgar

VZL 2010, 79(1):2-8

The neuroprotective efficacy of newly synthesized oximes (K250, K251) and the oximes introduced into the Czech Army for the first aid (obidoxime) and medical aid (HI-6) was compared in male Wistar rats. The potency of oximes to eliminate tabun-induced acute neurotoxic effects was evaluated with the help of a functional observational battery 24 hours following tabun intoxication. The obtained results demonstrate that the neuroprotective efficacy of newly synthesized oxime K251 is a little higher in comparison with the potency of obidoxime and HI-6 to eliminate tabun-induced acute neurotoxicity but the difference is not too high. On the contrary, another...

Colorimetric Detectors Based on Acetylcholinesterase and Its Construction

Miroslav Pohanka, Vítězslav Vlček, Jana Žďárová Karasová, Kamil Kuča, Jiří Cabal

VZL 2010, 79(1):9-14

Colorimetric detectors based on recognition capability of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) are a suitable tool for fast but sensitive detection of nerve agents and some pesticides based on AChE inhibition. In this review article, basic biochemical methods appropriate for colorimetric estimation of AChE enzymatic activity are presented. Moreover, the available matrices suitable for construction of dipsticks and chemical as well as physical immobilization protocols for AChE binding on matrice surface are described, too. Detehit and ChP-71 are indicated as typical colorimetric detectors for assay of nerve agents.

Beta-Amino Acids and Their Natural Biologically Active Derivatives. I. Derivatives of Beta-Alanine and Beta-Leucine

Jiří Patočka

VZL 2010, 79(1):15-22

Contrary to proteinogenic α-amino acids that are constituents of all proteins and enzymes which control the metabolism in living matter, most β-amino acids only occur as constituents of distinct natural compounds. Apparently, bacteria, cyanobacteria, fungi, and plants often incorporate β-amino acids into secondary metabolites. The most important β-amino acids are β-alanine, β-leucine, β-lysine, β-arginine, β-glutamate, β-phenylalanine and β-tyrosine.Beta-alanine is a naturally occurring amino acid which is not used in the biosynthesis of any major proteins or enzymes. Beta-Alanine is the most widespread...

Is Oxime Fluorination the Proper Way to Increase Penetration of These Compounds in the Central Nervous System?

Jana Žďárová Karasová, Jiří Kassa, Kamil Musílek, Young-Sik Jung, Kamil Kuča

VZL 2010, 79(1):23-27

The penetration of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) reactivators through the blood-brain barrier is hotly discussed question nowadays. The increase of lipophilicity of these compounds is one of the possible ways how to increase their penetration and also their efficacy in the central nervous system. The aim of this study is to compare the reactivation potency of newly synthesized oxime - oxime K203 - after its fluorination. This AChE reactivator was prepared at the Research Institute of Chemical Technology (Korea) and is known as K22836. The fluorination of oxime K203 leads to reduction of its therapeutic efficacy. The reactivation potency of newly synthesized...

Human Granulocytic Ehrlichiosis in Pardubice Region - a Case Report

Petr Knížek, Jiří Kobliha, František Sedláček

VZL 2010, 79(1):28-30

Human granulocytic ehrlichiosis (HGE) is a tick-borne zoonosis. It belongs to new emerging zoonoses. Based on available sources, it is certain that HGE does not occur only in American continent population as it was reported in 1996, but now it also appears in Europe where several cases have been reported too. The first Czech case of veterinary disease was diagnosed in a dog in 1996. Small ruminants may function as a reservoir of the bacteria Anaplasma phagocytophila and may represent a risk in transmisssion of this infection to human beings. Within the so-called differential diagnosis of the disease, which was developed in connection with a tick bite,...

Health Support after the Terrorist Attack - Kabul 2008

Martin Oberreiter, Miroslav Ryska, Božetěch Jurenka, Marek Kocvrlich

VZL 2010, 79(1):31-33

The author briefly describes a terrorist attack on civilians in the most luxurious hotel in the centre of Kabul on 14th January 2008. Furthermore, he describes professional work of the medical team of the 3rd Contingent of the Field Hospital on KAIA base (Kabul International Airport) after the admission of severely injured patients.

Analysis of the Current State of Medical Service Personnel Training at Role 1 before Their Deployment to Foreign Operations

Milan Růžička, Jaromír Mitáš, Hana Střítecká

VZL 2010, 79(1):34-38

Members of the Medical Service of the Czech Armed Forces have been almost 20 years the part of troops participating in different operations out of the Czech Republic. Successful performance of the tasks is apart from other things also dependent on quality of training which medical personnel and the support units complete before their deployment to the foreign mission.Training for a foreign mission is divided into two parts: military (performed by all the members together) and specialized (performed by individual professions). This training for the Medical Service is provided by the Medical Service Support Department of the Forces Support Command in...
