HISTORICAL ASPECTS OF BIOLOGICAL AGENT MISUSE

Roman Prymula

VZL 2002, 71(1):1-9

Without any doubt biological warfare ranks among the weapons of mass destruction, more precisely weapons causing mass casualties without affecting lifeless things. This definition can be changed, however, in the future. It is possible that microorganisms causing, for example, a massive corrosion of technical equipment or destroying the rubber parts of enemy weapon systems or his fuel supplies will be used in biological warfare. Biological warfare is unique concerning its variety in comparison with other weapons. It is also clear that the use of biological warfare is significantly cheaper and more effective from the point of view of the number of people...

BIOTERRORISM: ITS PRESENT RISKS

Roman Prymula

VZL 2002, 71(1):10-14

Bioterorrism has become one of the most important world problems. The terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center Towers and the Pentagon have brought new aspects of the current risks into focus and biological agents seem to be a possible follow-up way of how to harm Western democracy. In spite of the real danger of biological agent misuse for terrorists’ targets it should be clearly stated that the real risk is farfrom justifiting the panic reaction surrounding all such “biological disasters” in the world. Our task is to train the population to face similar dangerous situations realistically.

Václav Masopust, David Netuka, Jaroslav Plas, Oldřich Hudec

VZL 2002, 71(1):22-25

This article deals with the relationship between neurogenic hypertension and other diseases caused by neurovascular conflict. In Order to prove neurogenic hypertension on the basis of neurovascular conflict at the brainstem or the transition zone of the left vagus nerve, it is necessary as a first step to exclude other causes of neurogenic hypertension. For this purpose, changes in the blood pressure of patients with microvascular decompression during and after the operation were monitored. In the group of 43 patients no other neurovascular conflicts as a cause of neurogenic hypertension were confirmed.
