Tuberculosis - Current Data of Incidence in the Czech Republic

Marie Vacková, Jan Smetana

VZL 2005, 74(5):155-157

Authors of the article present current data of tuberculosis incidence in the Czech Republic and point out the issue of tuberculosis on the worldwide basis. According to the data of the tuberculosis Registry, in 2004 there were 1057 cases of tuberculosis in the Czech Republic and 52 people died. Thus, the Czech Republic is classified as a country with the low tuberculosis incidence. However, it is impossible to forget active searching of hidden sources of this infection.

Mobile System of Health Risk Assessment of Multiple Chemical Exposures

Zdeněk Fiala, Lenka Borská, Otakar Mika, Jan Kremláček, Tomáš Borský, Vladimír Kraják, Jan Kavalír

VZL 2005, 74(5):158-164

The proposed system of assessment enables fast screening of the actual health risk levels in situations of chemical threat. The system could facilitate and accelerate emergency management concerning application of protective devices, implementation of emergency precautions or total evacuation. The system includes analytical, physical and toxicological modules. The analytical module collects information about a form of chemical emergency event, actual air levels of selected dangerous compounds in the site of emergency event and actual atmospheric conditions. The physical module calculates the total concentration zones (the total zones of health risk)...

Computer Modeling and Simulation - New Technologies in Development of Means against Combat Chemical Substances

VZL 2005, 74(5):165-171

Reactivation process, when catalytical potency to the inhibited serine protease is returned, has been known for a long time. Unfortunately, no single acetylcholinesterase (AChE) reactivator able to reactivate sufficiently AChE inhibited by all nerve agents (sarin, cyclosarin, soman, tabun or VX) has been used. Attempts to find such a compound were based on experimental methods only. However, structural aspects of reactivation examined by computer methods have not been explained till now. In this article, chemical reaction (reactivation) is described using the broad range of computer chemistry methods that is necessary for solving structural and energetical...

Azaspiracid - a New Biotoxin

Vratislav Hrdina, Jiří Patočka, Vladimír Měrka, Radomír Hrdina

VZL 2005, 74(5):172-174

Azaspiracids (AZAs) represent new members of phycotoxins discovered on the Irish coast in 1995. In November 1995, at least eight people became ill after eating mussels (Mytilus edulis). From the meat of these mussels five structurally similar compounds: azaspiracids AZA-1 to AZA-5 and afterwards also AZA-6 to AZA-11 were isolated. Azaspiracids differ from any of the previously known marine toxins. AZAs cause severe disturbances of the intestinal tract, liver and pancreas. A progressive muscular paralysis, i.e. neurotoxic effects, could be proved by the mouse bioassay. In spite of significant threat to human health the mechanism of AZAs toxic effects...
