Miroslav Brndiar, Jaroslav Kačerovský, Jiří Knížek, Jan M. Horáček, Lucie Chadimová, Ladislav Jebavý

VZL 2006, 75(1):1-6

A significant correlation (R = 0,904) between body mass index and microalbuminuria in 21 patients was investigated. A similar correlation between microalbuminuria and glomerular filtration R = 0,837 was found as well. Obesity as an indifferent risk factor of nephropathologic events is presented.

Cardiac Complications during Oncologic Treatment - Current Diagnostic Methods

Jan M. Horáček, Radek Pudil, Ladislav Jebavý, Miloš Tichý, Jana Pástorová, Ladislav Slováček, Miroslav Brndiar

VZL 2006, 75(1):7-12

The article deals with problems of cardiotoxicity of antitumorous treatment. In the first part, the most frequent causes and signs of cardiotoxicity of oncologic treatment are briefly mentioned. In the second part, the present-day diagnostic methods of cardiotoxicity are reviewed. The role of potential biochemical markers of heart damage is emphasized. The authors' own results are also presented. The article contains a table showing the current classification of cardiotoxicity according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

Palliative Therapy of Pain and Dyspnoe in Oncologic Patients in Terminal Stages of Malignancies

Ladislav Slováček, Ladislav Jebavý, Birgita Slováčková

VZL 2006, 75(1):13-16

The authors describe pain and dyspnoe in oncologic patients in terminal stages of malignancies, and the potentials influencing them by palliative treatment.

Selected Acute Effects of Ultraviolet Radiation on Organism

Jana Rostová, Lenka Borská, Zdeněk Fiala, Jan Krejsek

VZL 2006, 75(1):17-24

Ultraviolet radiation (UV) may significantly affect human health. Long term exposure to UV radiation causes many acute changes in organism, extent and intensity of which is modified by individual factors. The aim of this work is to review current knowledge of mechanisms of UV radiation effect on organism. Consequences of acute skin exposure to UV radiation are the rise of pigmentation and inflammation together with edema and erythema. The inflammation is caused by the change of cytokine production and one of the accompanying signs is the death of damaged cells by apoptosis. Apoptosis is interposed by caspases activation. Many pro- and anti- apoptopic...

The Prevalence of Asymptomatic Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B Forms in Adults and Its Impact on Vaccination in the Military

Roman Chlíbek, Jan Smetana, Roman Šindelář, Beata Čečetková

VZL 2006, 75(1):25-31

With increasing participation of the Czech Army personnel in military missions and presence of soldiers abroad, the prevention of infectious diseases connected with traveling and stays in exotic regions is more and more important. From this point of view and from the character of commitment, soldiers are exposed more than anybody else to the danger of infectious diseases or epidemics. Viral hepatitis A (VHA) and B (VHB) belong to the most frequent diseases which can be preventively influenced and whose infection risk during stays in endemic areas is high. For this reason, vaccination against these hepatitis is carried out in the Czech Army almost as...

Principles of Infectious Diseases Prevention during the Stay Abroad

Jan Smetana, Roman Chlíbek

VZL 2006, 75(1):32-36

In recent 10 years, the high increase of people traveling abroad has been noticed. More and more people are going to the areas with an increased risk of health damage. A potential affection by infectious disease is one of the risk factors. An introduction of appropriate preventive measures may decrease a risk of potential intoxication. The authors describe a risk of transmission of infectious diseases duriny the stay abroad. They give basic information on possibilities of health protection. These recommendations are focused on preparation before the departure, on behavior during the stay in epidemic risk areas and on prevetion against intoxications...

Influence of Length and Shape of the Connecting Chain of Bisquaternary Acetylcholinesterase Reactivators on Their Potency to Reactivate Enzyme Inhibited by Sarin

Kamil Kuča, Daniel Jun, Kamil Musílek

VZL 2006, 75(1):37-40

Antidotal treatment of nerve agent poisonings consists of anticholinergics (atropine mainly) and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) reactivators (pralidoxime, obidoxime, methoxime or HI-6). Due to the fact that currently available AChE reactivators are not able to reactivate AChE inhibited by all potential nerve agents, the development of new AChE reactivators still continues. For this purpose, the understanding of relationship between structural factors and their influence on the reactivation potency is useful. Especially, presence and number of functional oxime groups, presence and number of quaternary nitrogens, lentgh and shape of the connecting chain...
