Czech Military Medical Journal "Vojenské zdravotnické listy" and Its Further Perspectives
Jiří Patočka, Vladimír Měrka
VZL 2006, 75(3):81-84
Czech Military Medical Journal "Vojenské zdravotnické listy" (VZL) is the oldest Army periodical in the Czech Republic. Its first issue appeared in 1925. Authors evaluate in their study VZL according to the Science Citation Index (SCI) and compare it with other 39 military medical periodicals from all over the world. VZL is surprisingly placed sixth in this evaluation. Furthermore authors made some suggestions how to improve its quality, e.g. to build up an international editorial board, increase the number of English written contributions etc.
Alloplasty in Treatment of Hallux Rigidus
Jiří Fousek, Dagmar Kuběnová
VZL 2006, 75(3):85-91
The authors present their first experience with implantation of the total Toefit Plus endoprothesis in treatment of hallux rigidus. They show their results in implantation of this prothesis in a group of 21 implanted endoprotheses in 19 patients. The motion in the first MTP joint after the implantation of this endoprothesis has significantly improved in all the patients and the functional score according to Kitaok has significantly increased. The advantage of this endoprothesis is that it can be implanted even in patients after the previous unsuccessful operations of hallux rigidus.
Selected Aspects Influencing the Quality of Life in Patients with Multiple Myeloma and Malignant Lymphoma after the Hematopoietic Stem cell Transplantation
Ladislav Slováček, Birgita Slováčková, Ladislav Jebavý
VZL 2006, 75(3):92-100
Aim: The study analyses the influence of selected aspects on the global quality of life in patients with multiple myeloma and malignant lymphoma after the hematopoietic stem cell transplantation at the Department of Clinical Hematology of the Second Internal Clinic of the University Hospital and Medical Faculty of Charles University in Hradec Králové from 2001 to 2003. Patients and Methods: The total number of respondents after the transplantation was 80 and the return rate of questionnaire was 70% (56 respondents - 32 with multiple myeloma - average age was 60 years and 24 with malignant lymphoma - average age was 46,5 years). The Czech version of...
Comparison of the 24-Hour Periodicity of Extrasystoles in Uncomplicated Myocardial Infarction in the Lowland and Altitude Chronic Respiratory Insufficiency - the First Results
Štefan Kujaník, Kamila Lukáčová, Mikuláš Mayer, Juraj Podracký, Marián Sninčák
VZL 2006, 75(3):101-106
Myocardial infarction, chronic respiratory insufficiency and higher altitude are known to increase the cardiac arrhythmia occurrence. The aim of this study was to compare the 24-hour periodicity of supraventricular and ventricular extrasystoles in male patients over 50 years with uncomplicated myocardial infarction in the lowland and chronic respiratory insufficiency at the moderate altitude of 1150 m. Extrasystoles were evaluated from the 24-hour Holter ECG. The 24-hour occurrence of both types of extrasystoles was higher than in healthy persons, in uncomplicated myocardial infarction higher than in chronic respiratory insufficiency. In both groups...
Electrocardiographic Monitoring of Acute Cardiotoxicity of Anthracyclines
Martin Jakl, Jan M. Horáček
VZL 2006, 75(3):107-110
The antitumorous treatment has a lot of side effects. One of them is also cardiac toxicity. The study focuses on using electrocardiography in monitoring of acute cardiac toxicity induced by anthracyclines. There were 15 patients with newly diagnosed acute leukemia or myelodysplastic syndrome participating in the study. The patients were treated by induction chemotherapy containing anthracyclines (idarubicin, daunorubicin or mitoxantron). The study shows the suitability of using electrocardiography to monitor acute cardiac toxicity of anthracyclines, particularly important is the prolongation of QTc interval, which can cause ventricular arrhythmias...
Chronic Effects of Ultraviolet Radiation on Organism
Jana Rostová, Lenka Borská, Zdeněk Fiala, Jan Krejsek
VZL 2006, 75(3):111-119
Long term exposure to Ultraviolet-radiation (UV) causes many chronic changes in organism which extent and intensity is being modified by individual factors. The aim of this paper is to give an overview of current information on mechanisms of chronic effect of UV radiation on organism. Skin aging caused by chronic exposure to UV radiation is connected with corial elasthosis, glykosaminoglykan multiplication, and collagen fibres diminution and with many other changes, caused by chronic inflammation (heliodermatitis). The most frequent forms of skin malignancies, caused by chronic exposures to UV radiation, are bazalioma, spinalioma and malignant melanoma....
Coffee from the View of Toxicologist
Veronika Petriková, Jiří Patočka
VZL 2006, 75(3):120-125
Coffee is a widely consumed beverage, usually served hot, prepared from roasted seeds of a coffee plant. In terms of money, coffee is the second most traded commodity in the world, that is outclassed only by petroleum. Even though substances in coffee have relatively small health effects they are widely discussed by the public. Coffee is one of mankind's main sources of caffeine, compound with a stimulating effect. Caffeine is the most widely consumed psychoactive "drug" in the world and probably one of the most commonly used stimulants in sports. Its potential benefits and hazards have been, and continue to be, widely studied and discussed. For example...
Phosgene: Health Hazard
Magdaléna Horáková, Miroslava Jandová, Helena Kociánová
VZL 2006, 75(3):126-129
Phosgene (carbonyl chloride, CAS 75-44-5) is highly reactive, formerly warfare toxic gas of historical significance but current industrial importance. It is a strong lung irritant which can induce pulmonary epithelial and endothelial cell apoptosis, suggesting that the mechanism of phosgene-induced pulmonary edema causes apoptosis of lung cells. This article deals with history, toxicity, clinical symptoms of the disease, and general concepts in therapy of phosgene intoxications.
