The authors provide a survey of the incidence of pseudoseizures (and epileptic seizures) in active duty soldiers hospitalized at the Neurological Department of the Olomouc Military Hospital from 1992 to 2001. These Seizures accountedfor 8. 82% of the total number of active duty Soldiers hospitalized. Of this total number of seizures, 75.98% were pseudoseizures and 24.02% epileptic Seizures. Of the total number ofpseudoseizures, 89.03% were in compulsory military service Soldiers and 10.97% in career soldiers which accountedfor 7.6 % of the total number of compulsory military service Soldiers hospitalized and 3.39 % of the total number of career Soldiers...

PILOTS HIT IN-FLIGHT WITH LASER BEAMS

Josef Chaloupka, Jiří Šulc

VZL 2003, 72(3):97-100

Recently a number of accidental or intentional illuminations of flight crews with laser beams have been recorded. These are, no doubt, rare but serious events both for flight safety and for the aviators' health. Pilots whose visual organs were hit with a laser during a flight, should be informed of the necessity of a special examination first by a flight surgeon and then by an aviation ophthalmologist even if they have no complaints.

REACTION OF THE AUTONOMOUS NERVOUS SYSTEM IN FLIGHT TECHNICAL STAFF TO ELECTROMAGNETIC FIELDS IN THE VERY HIGH FREQUENCY BAND

Oto Osina

VZL 2003, 72(3):101-104

This study disscuses the effect of electromagnetic fields on the autonomous nervous system (ANS) Of a human being. Within the periodical preventive examinations of professional flight technicans, we monitored under laboratory conditions the effects of electromagnetic fields using heart frequency variability spectral analysis. The results of the examination showed that the electromagtIetic field caused in the ANS a stress reaction manifested by an increased sympathicotonia. This knowledge can be applied when assigning persons to different places of work having exposure to electromagnetic fields. Early preventive measures...

STRYCHNINE - HISTORY AND TODAY

Alena Volfová, Jiří Patočka

VZL 2003, 72(3):110-113

Strychnine is a poisonous indole alkaloid which was first identified in plants of the Strychnos genus and Loganiaceae family. It is an extremely toxic compound. Strychnine is rapidly absorbedfrom the gastrointestinal and respiratory tracts and causes failure of the central nervous system and induces seizures. The principal symptom is strong convulsions, sometimes beginning within a few minutes of ingestion and it may be fatal. Any sound or movement may elicit seizure activity. Other symptoms include: muscular cramps (especially in the neck and back), joint stiffness, muscle twitching, restlessness, headache, severe blood-oxygen deficiency...

STANDARDIZED EXTRACT OF ST. JOHN’S WORT: A NEW HERBAL ANTIDEPRESSANT

Jiří Patočka, Anna Strunecká

VZL 2003, 72(3):114-118

St. John’s wort (Hypericum perforatum) has been used as a medical herb for over 2000 years. Over the past two decades, its application as a standardized plant extractfor treating depression has undergone rigorous scientific investigation, and its eflectiveness has been shown in studies comparing it with placebo and difierent commonly used antidepressants. Safety and tolerability studies have revealed that Hypericum preparations have better safety and tolerability profiles than synthetic antidepressants. The indications for the use of St. John’s wort preparations include patients with mild or. moderate depression.

THE STRUCTURE OF DRUG ADVERTISEMENTS IN TWO LEADING PROFESSIONAL JOURNALS (1997-1998)

H. Müllerová, J. Vlček, M. Kocmanová

THE SIDE-EFFECT OF IONIZING RADIATION I: THE DEFINITION, METHODS AND ACTION OF IRRADIATED CELLS

Jan Österreicher, Jürgen Vogt, Tilman Butz, Leoš Navrátil, Aleš Macela

VZL 2003, 72(3):124-128

This study defines the term the side-effect of ionizing radiation and discusses the usefulness of various Scientific methods used for Side-effect evaluation. It also briefly introduces a relatively new technology, a microbeam facility from the radiobiological and other branch point of view. The microbeam facility is able to irradiate the defined subcellular compartments with the exact number of particles with the energy requested.

AN IN VITRO COMPARISON OF THE REACTIVATOR EFFICACY OF POTENTIAL SYMMETRIC BISQUATERNARY ACETYLCHOLINESTERASE REACTIVATORS WHICH DIFFER IN THEIR CONNECTING CHAIN LENGTH

Kamil Kuča, Jiří Cabal

VZL 2003, 72(3):129-131

The reactivation potencies of two potential reactivators of the VX-inhibited acetycholinesterase — I.3-bis(2-hydroxyiminomethypyridinium) propane dibromide and 1.4-bis(2-hya'roxyiminomethypyridinium) butane dibromide were compared. Oxime with its longer connecting chain seems to be a better reactivator of VX-inhibited acetylcholinesterase.

COST ASSESSMENT AND EXAMPLE APPROACH TO DEEP VENOUS THROMBOSIS TREATMENT

Tzvetan Kremenski, Kuzman Girov, Assen Petkov, Ilko Getov

VZL 2003, 72(3):132-136

The authors provide an overview of the social significance of the deep venous thrombosis (DVT) and large funds from both patients and health insurance organisations for the treatment. We compared the results obtained during treatment of patients with unfractionated heparin (UFH) and low molecular weight heparin (LMWH).The presented data and results for the cost of treatment of DVT patients require considerable financing. From the economic point of view under the conditions of health insurance it is important to increase the number of patients treated in outpatient settings.
