THE PROBLEM OF HANTAVIRUS INFECTIONS IN THE CZECH ARMY
Marie Vacková, Jiří Beran, Vladimír Radovnický, Radek Hubač
VZL 2000, 69(3):93-97
Hantavirus infections are among those infections having natural foci. Even though an icreased incidence of this disease is not reported in our country, there is a potential risk for Czech Army personnel during stays in the field due to the epidemiology of this infection. Also in connection with missions abroad, it not possible to exclude the importation of this infection. For this reason it is necessary to pay attention to these questions. In the very near future not only a method for the diagnosis of this disease should be introduced into selected Czech Army laboratories, but also attention should be paid to the incidence of rodents which can be the...
FLUID REPLACEMENT GUIDELINES FOR HOT ENVIRONMENTS
František Bílek
VZL 2000, 69(3):98-102
A few cases of water poisoning in the US. Army caused a need to amend the present guidelines of the U.S. Army which specify a certain regimen of fluid intake to maintain the performance of soldiers and to minimize casualties due to hyperthermia. In 1997 a study by the US. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine focused on recommendations for training in hot environments was launched. The result of this study are changes in recommendations for the replacement of liquids based on the production of perspiration. These recommendations will be summarized into a well-arranged table which will be available for commanders as a suitable time...
A CURRENT PROBLEM OF THE CONVENTION ON PROHIBITION OF CHEMICAL WEAPONS FROM THE POINT OF VIEW OF THE ECONOMIC AND TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENT OF STATE PARTIES
Ladislav Středa, Jiří Bajgar
VZL 2000, 69(3):103-107
The problems of the use of Saxitoxin for diagnostic and research purposes are discussed. The present Convention on the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons limiting any use of saxitoxin hampers research programmes and quick diagnostics in cases of saxitoxin poisoning. The effort to solve this situation is described and possible ways ofsolution are suggested.
POST-TRAUMATIC INTRACRANIAL EPIDURAL HAEMATOMA
Petr Kozler
VZL 2000, 69(3):108-112
The article summarizes the present literary data concerning the problem of post-traumatic intercranial epidural haematoma. Experience with 11 injured patients who were operated on for this diagnosis at the Neurosurgical Clinic of the Central Military Hospital and the First Medical Faculty in Prague during 1998 is also discussed. In accordance with the literary data we can state, based on the results of our group of injured patients, that in this case there is an absolute indication for surgical treatment which must be performed immediately. The prognosis of the injured is determined by the state of consciousness before the operation and by the presence...
THE INFLUNCE OF INTERSTITIAL LASER HYPERTHERMIA ON TUMOROUS TISSUE EXPERIMENT
Pavel Hladík, Jan Bedrna, Dušan Šimkovič, Ladislav Strnad, František Langr, Milan Mělka
VZL 2000, 69(3):112-122
In this experiment on mice a stuaj/ proving the destruction of tumorous tissue by the efi'ect of interstítial laser hyperthermia was conducted. The extent Ofnecrotic damage to tumorous tissue after irradiation with a laser was the same using two diflerent values of laser output power. The use of the lowest therapeutically effective value Of laser output during interstítial laser hyperthermia is significant for the prevention of carbonization ofthe light conductivefìlament during the output.

MEDICAL SUPPORT IN THE PRUSSIAN-AUSTRIAN WAR OF 1866
Vladimír Měrka, Pavel Celba
VZL 2000, 69(3):129-135
In connection with the yearly commemoration ceremony on the battlefield near Hradec Králové a brief analysis of medical support in the battle at that time is given. In spite of the participation of many famous advisers (professors of medical schools) the organization of medical support often failed. In addition, the Austrian wounded were left on the battlefield without any help when the Austrian medical service retreated with the retreating units, because Austria was not yet a signatory of the Geneva Convention. On the basis of these war experiences, some improvements in organization, training and material equipment of the medical service were...
NATURAL ANTIOXIDANTS AND PSYCHOPHYSICAL STRAIN
V. Katalinič, S. Radič, D. Ropac
VZL 2000, 69(3):136-140
It has been hypothesized that the extreme psychophysical strain to which some of the military population (e. g., diver-commandos, air pilots, submarine personnel, radar operators) is frequently exposed, can trigger the O2 radical cascade and lipid peroxidation, thereby exacerbating body oxidative stress. When provided with antioxidative machinery (i.e. antioxidant molecules and enzymes), aerobic cells can cope with the reactive oxygen species. For this reason, a diet rich in antioxidant nutrients is of great importance for health preservation in individuals exposed to a hazardous environment, extensive sunlight, or arduous physical tasks....
A SANITARY-HYGIENIC ESTIMATION OF DRINKING WATER FROM WELLS OF WARSAW’S GARRISON MILITARY UNITS
E. Stežycka, J. Bzdega, M. Nasiadka
VZL 2000, 69(3):140-144
A total of 12 physicochemical parameters in water samples from the military units’ own water wells were examined. The content of nitrates, chlorides, water hardness and pH range were in accordance with regulations obligatory in Poland in all of the tested samples. In 30 % of military units water exceeded the permitted content of manganese, iron, turbidity and colour.
